A Jamdani cotton saree in white, with the bonolota — a creeper motif — woven directly into the fabric, not printed on it.

Hand-woven in Phulia, West Bengal. Jamdani is a weaving technique, not a printed pattern: the bonolota creeper is created on the loom itself, with extra weft threads inserted by hand between the warps, motif by motif. It is among the most labour-intensive weaving techniques in the world. The cotton is fine and lightly sheer; the kind of saree you can fold into a small square and still drape an evening.

Specifics

  • Material: Fine handloom cotton (Jamdani count, approximately 80–100 — confirm with the weaver)
  • Weight: approximately 420 gms
  • Length: 5.5 metres, with 0.8m blouse piece
  • Weave: Jamdani — supplementary weft, bonolota (creeper) motif woven into the cloth
  • Origin: Phulia, West Bengal
  • Variations: Small irregularities in motif placement and weft spacing are characteristic of Jamdani — hand-woven, motif by motif
  • Care: Dry clean for the first wash. Cold hand-wash thereafter, in shade, with a mild detergent. Iron on low heat. Store folded in cotton, not plastic.
